The Quake engine is the game engine developed by id Software to power their 1996 video game Quake. It featured true 3D real-time rendering, and made its debut on June 22nd, 1996. It is now licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL).

From it's earlist days, the Quake Engine recieved many forks and derivatives, including GLQuake and VQuake. Perhaps the most important of these was QuakeWorld, an improved multiplayed client and one of the first to feature client-side prediction.
